Yatra: Yellow Brick Road from India to Aotearoa: July - August

Home, what is home? A place? a feeling? The people? The soundscape? The landscape? Or all of them together all at once? I’ve been asking myself this question since I arrived in Aotearoa in 2019. My art series explores this liminal space of being between places, countries, continents, and cultures. Yatra, a Hindi word for a journey; it expresses this endless journey within to discover a sense of belonging.

Migrants, a need? A necessity? Or a nuisance? What are we really in this new place?; Always searching for “our place” in this new place. In this process of finding a sense of place what happens to our past, our memories, our families, our culture? Sometimes it stays, sometimes it melts, sometimes it infuses.

Yatra is my journey of finding myself, my culture and my sense of belonging, and the culture of the place that I inhabit now. It is an ever-changing, ever-evolving process that embodies the past, the present, and the future.
